General News: (1) Don’t forget Tuesday is the last day for money for Invisible Children for the Kiss the Goat Contest. CONGRATULATIONS !!! WE RASIED OVER $ 1,200.00 FOR INVISIBLE CHILDREN. (2) A letter is coming home Thursday about a county wide dress code for next year. It gives you the address to submit a survey & give your opinion. The address is www.scsk12.org then click on the Dress Code Survey.

SCIENCE: THANK YOU to everyone who sent in items we have everything we needed, and the kids had a blast making and eating a landfill! Thank you for helping us!!!!!

Mon. 9/29 CW: Present creature from Adaptation – It’s A Way of Life HW: check edublogs & write a note in agenda of item you can provide for Friday’s lab.

Tues. 9/30 CW: Finish creature presentations. (2) Pollution Solution Project sheet home PLEASE SEE SHEET sent home today called “Making A Difference in the Environment” which explains exactly what we are doing and when we are doing it. Mom or dad must sign off on it, & so must I. Decide what you want to do; you must decide by Monday 10/6, and have a parent signature. We will be in the library on 10/6 researching how much pollution affects us. On Thursday 10/9 & Friday 10/10 we will learn how to make a Power Point slideshow presentation, and each student will make one for their idea for a project. On 10/16 we will write an email or letter to an adult family member or friend encouraging them to do what you did. HW: decide idea for project, get approval, & start researching

Wed. 10/1 CW: Landfills -(1) www.howstuffworks.com/landfill.htm (2) Brainpop on Waste Management. (3) Magic School Bus DVD on Recycling (4) We also took notes – get them if you were absent HW: (1) project idea due Monday (2) We need little disposable cups & plastic spoons for Friday’s edible landfill lab.

Thurs. 10/2 CW: Landfills continued – (1) We saw how a Kimberly Clarke company (makes paper towels) uses methane gas from a landfill to run its factory (2) we put a diagram of a landfill in our notes & made a list of what each food item represents in the landfill (3) finish Science World questions from earlier in the week. HW: (1) bring in items for tomorrow if you said you would & haven’t already (2) your project idea needs to be signed & approved by your parent/guardian & brought to me no later than Monday

Fri. 10/3 CW: Making an edible landfill lab and writing about the experience of what landfills do. HW: your project idea needs to be signed & approved by your parent/guardian & brought to me no later than Monday

September 22-26

General News: (1) Don’t forget to send in your suggested $5 donation towards treat days & parties sent home by our wonderful room moms. Also, please let them know if you are able to send in items for treat days/parties and/or would like to attend the December party. If you want your child’s information included on a class list, please send that as well. Thanks! (2) Remember our “Kiss the Goat” campaign to raise money for Invisible Children has begun. On Monday we saw a film about Sunday one of the Invisible Children. Are you all going to raise enough money that I have to kiss a goat? (3) PICTURE proofs are going home Monday & the money & order is due by Friday, if you want any pictures. All checks are made payable to: Lifetouch.  FREE U of M football tickets for middle school students.  Any middle school student may go to gate 3 at the Liberty Bowl prior to Saturday’s 1:00 game against ASU & get a free ticket.  Tickets for family members will be $10.  The tickets may be used after the game for free admission to the fair.

Science 9/22 – 9/26

Mon.9/22 CW: (1) Review for chp. 4 test check textbook pp. 104-105 & workbook pp. 22-29 (2) Bill Nye the Science Guy – Pollution Solutions – ask your family if you have older commodes & use the water bottle in the tank idea to conserve water. DON’T do this if you have the newer low water usage commodes. HW: study for chp. 4 test on Wednesday

Tues. 9/23 CW: Chp. 4 vocabulary puzzle & write down ideas about pollution solution project. Class C got to see the Bill Nye video on pollution solutions. HW: study for chp. 4 test tomorrow!

Wed. 9/24 CW: (1) Test chp. 4 (2) Read about adaptations pp. 66-69 (3) Setting up adaptation project – see me if you were absent to find out how to do this HW: none

Thurs. 9/25 CW: In your composition books under notes, write all necessary information about your imaginary organism – see pp. 52-53 for all the information you need to include.  Also make a colored sketch of your organism.  HW: bring materials to make your organism tomorrow in class – be sure to bring tape and/or glue.  Do NOT go buy anything to make this.  You can use old socks, bottles, cardboard, newspaper, etc.

September 15 – 19

General News: ( 1)  Two clubs begin meeting this week.  Book Club meets Tuesday afternoon until 4:00 in Mrs. Greenburg’s room.  Students must have a note to stay.  They are to bring their favorite book & a snack.  Scrabble Club also meets Tuesday afternoon until 4:15.  They also will need a note to stay, and girls are to bring cookies and guys are to bring sodas so they can share for a snack.  (2) Children’s Identity Cards are coming home Monday – they are free picture cards where you can store identifying information about your children.  (3) CHS FOOTBALL RULES – all CMS students going to the high school football games on Friday night must be accompanied by an adult – see letter from Mrs. Warren that comes home Tuesday.  (4) On Thursday, students are bringing home a note from the room moms (THANK YOU Mrs. Lunsford, Mrs. Brewer, & Mrs. Burns) about the parties, treat days, $5 gift cards for our reward ticket drawing for the end of the nine weeks, and a form to be on the class list.  Please read the information and fill out the forms for what you would like you and your child to participate.

Science 9/15 – 9/19

Mon. 9/15  CW:  (1) Test over chapter 2.  If you were absent today plan on taking it tomorrow.  If you are still absent tomorrow, see me to schedule your make-up test.  (2) finish chapter 2 vocabulary review (3) read lab pp. 546-547  HW: none – if you want to get ahead we will be working on chapter 4 next.

Tues. 9/16  CW:  (1) Lab – Saving the Wild Bean -we did this in class in our lab groups  (2) Science World magazine article about world’s largest forest being destroyed.  HW: none

Wed. 9/17  CW: Pollution Problems chapter 4 lesson 1.  We discussed problems that exist on Earth, mostly due to humans.  HW: review chp. 4 lesson 1 tonight.  Discuss with your family what kind of pollution problems existed when your parents/grandparents were kids.  BONUS: Write in your agenda the one of the pollution problems you all discussed & have your parent sign your agenda book beside the pollution problem you wrote in the agenda.  I will check for it tomorrow and add bonus points to a quiz grade.

Thurs. 9/18  CW: (1) We reviewed the pollution problems from yesterday. (2) We talked about some Pollution Solutions – chp. 4 lesson 2 and determined over 15 ways to reuse a plastic shopping bag. (3) We saw a bird’s nest Danielle brought into class that has plastic in it.  (4) students began on pp. 104-105 – they will finish in class tomorrow.  HW:  begin thinking about a Pollution Solution idea you would like to do (see p. 99 for some ideas) that will impact your family, neighbors, and/or community.  More information to come next week.  We will learn how to make Power Points to help with this project.

Fri. 9/19  I was not here today, so this was not posted until Monday 9/22.  CW: (1) finish Science World sheet (2) finish from yesterday textbook pp. 104-105 #1-13 (skip #10), 15, & 17-20 (3) workbook pp. 22-29 HW: finish wkbk. pp. 22-29 if you didn’t in class today

General News: (1) If you have not sold or paid for the Entertainment coupon book ($20), please pay for it or return it now. It was due last week. (2) THANK YOU to Alicia Brewer (Alyssa’s mom), Melanye Lunsford (Madeline’s mom), and Denise Burns (Peyton’s mom) for volunteering to be our class room moms. We have a meeting Thursday afternoon at 3:15 in the library.  (3) Don’t forget to bring your change for the Multiple Sclerosis drive – put it in a ziploc bag with the amount of coins inside.

Science 9/8 – 9/12

Mon. 9/8 CW: (Science A went to the lab to do the experiment Measuring Liquids – they did what is written below last Friday, since the lab was unavailable first thing Friday morning. ) We began chapter 2 – The Interaction of Living Things pp. 34-39. We looked at the brainpop on what an ecosystem is. Students then did an exercise to see how we learn in pictures not words. Students then wrote all vocabulary words for lesson 1 (they are purple in color), their own definition, & drew & colored their own picture for them. HW: workbook pp. 9-10 are due tomorrow.

Tues. 9/9 CW: (1) graded papers returned & conclusion written for Measuring Liquids lab (2) check wb. pp. 9-10 (3) check # 1-4 p. 39 end of section 1 review in textbook (4) lesson 2 – pp. 40-45 discuss & watch brainpop on food chains & take brainpop quiz (5) wb. pp. 11-12 # 1-13 HW: finish wb. pp. 11-12 if you didn’t in class & review vocabulary (words in purple) from lessons 1 & 2 tonight – know them for tomorrow

Wed. 9/10 CW: (1) Check wb. pp. 11-12 (2) Play a group competition game for bonus points for Monday’s test by reviewing the vocabulary for lessons 1 & 2 (3) Find biotic & abiotic factors as well as adaptations that help the animals survive in the desert from the Magic School Bus video “All Dried Up.” HW: (1) wear tennis shoes tomorrow for an outdoor activity (2) CHAPTER 2 TEST IS MONDAY

Thurs. 9/11 Today we remembered the anniversary of 9/11 by placing flags outside on the lawn facing Poplar.  Come by and see it – it will move you!   Also, remember to bring your coins for the MS Drive.  Put them in a ziploc bag with the amount listed on the bag or on paper in the bag.   CW:  (1) We played the game Oh Deer! to learn about limiting factors &  carrying capacity.  If you weren’t here, talk to a team mate to understand these two important concepts.  (2) we began on homework, since it is a little long, pp. 56-57 # 1-13, 15-16, & 19-27 – due tomorrow.  HW: (1) finish if you didn’t in class pp. 56-57 # 1-13, 15-16, & 19-27 – due tomorrow (2) CHAPTER 2 TEST IS MONDAY.

Fri. 9/12   CW: (1) We reviewed how organisms interact with the environment – Oh Deer! from yesterday  (2) We discussed how organisms interact with one another through competition, symbiosis, predator-prey, & co-evolution all found on pp. 47-51.  (3) We watched the brainpop on symbiosis and answered the questions together  (4) Students did a 10 question worksheet on symbiosis  (5) We checked home work together  (6) Students began vocabulary review sheet for chp. 2.  HW: CHAPTER 2 TEST IS MONDAY –  STUDY!!!

General News: (1) Power School is up & running. You should have received your child’s password in the mail. Homeroom teachers are sending home this same information with your child today. I had my homeroom staple the letter in their agendas. (2) The first dance 6th graders may attend is this Friday after school in the gym until 6. Permission slips were handed out Tuesday. Students must bring their signed permission slip and $8 with them to lunch Wednesday – Friday to buy a ticket. Tickets will NOT be sold at the door. (3) ALL FUNDRAISER ORDERS AND COUPON BOOKS NOT SOLD ARE DUE FRIDAY 9/5

Mon. 9/1 Labor Day Holiday

Tues.. 9/2 CW: (1) Complete Something’s Fishy lab (2) Set up composition books – see a class mate if you weren’t here & set yours up just like they did. HW: dress for lab Friday

Wed. 9/ 3 CW: If you were absent, I’m sorry you missed your chance to chew gum at school for a science lab! You need to copy today’s lab from a classmate into your own composition book. You will use this lab to help you write all future labs. HW: dress for lab Friday. Don’t forget if you want to attend Friday’s dance after school you must have your permission slip and $8 brought to lunch tomorrow or Friday. NO tickets will be sold at the door.

Thurs. 9/4 CW: (1) finish conclusion on gum chewing lab (2) Write up Measuring Liquid Volume (see p. 27 in your textbook) – we wrote as a class the purpose, research, & hypothesis. Then in lab groups, students wrote materials, procedures, & made a chart to record what they will seeing in lab tomorrow. HW: finish writing up the lab found on textbook p. 27 dress for lab tomorrow. Don’t forget if you want to attend Friday’s dance after school you must have your permission slip and $8 brought to lunch tomorrow or Friday. NO tickets will be sold at the door. ALL FUNDRAISER ORDERS & UNSOLD ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS ARE DUE TOMORROW.

Fri 9/5 CW: All classes, except science A, went to lab today. Science A will go Monday. We will all finish the conclusion for the lab on Monday & begin chapter 2. HW: Science A only dress for lab on Monday. EVERYONE WHO HAS NOT PAID FOR AN ENTERTAINMENT BOOK OR SOLD IT TO SOMEONE ELSE, EITHER NEEDS TO BRING $20 MONDAY OR THE ENTERTAINMENT BOOK THANKS!
