General News – Interims go home Wednesday. On science, please note that while we have many grades, we have only ONE test grade right now. Since tests count 40% of the average, some students’ averages are lower due to just one test & project grade. We will be having several more tests and a project. Students need to be sure they continue to work hard up until the last day of school. Spring Fever can ruin averages.

Also, Wednesday is Earth Day. Disney has produced a movie called Earth that comes out this week. It is REAL life and death stuff for the animal families that the documentary follows. So know that there will be fighting among the animals for survival and death of animals. Anyone on our team who would like to meet at the Collierville Malco for the FRIDAY 4:40 showing of Earth, please come meet and go with us. You will need to be picked up at 6:15. If you don’t get to go with us, and you want to see the movie, please try to see it sometime before next Wednesday. Disney will plant a tree for each ticket sold the first week of the movie.

Science 4/20 – 4/24 We have our Family Life curriculum this week. This is a GREAT chance for you to let your kids ask you questions. We will have fun one night with homework this week learning about dominant & recessive traits. We will see why some of us can roll our tongues and others can’t. At any time this week if a student asks a question that is not specifically & exactly covered in the curriculum we teach for the 6th grade level, I will respond, “That’s a great question to go home and ask your parent!”

Mon. 4/20 CW: We talked about the Endocrine System today. We talked about how glands make hormones which are chemicals and they regulate all kinds of things from metabolism to sugar to male and female characteristics. We began a discussion of dominant & recessive traits. HW: Trait chart is due Wed.

Tues. 4/21 CW: Dominant & recessive genes & sex linked traits like color blindness. Begin drawing of person based on the traits you ended up with from flipping your penny twice. HW: Trait chart is due Wed.

Wed. 4/22 EARTH DAY! INTERIMS WENT HOME TODAY CW: Review which traits on the chart were dominant & recessive. Make final drawing of person on manilla paper. On back. write about your person’s traits and talents. HW: we need kleenex, please send a box if you can. If you want to meet to see Disney’s Earth movie – we are going Friday at 4:40. Meet at Collierville Malco around 4:30 & you need to be picked up at 6:15

Thurs. 4/23 CW: Film about puberty with Mrs. Butner (guidance counselor). She encouraged students to go home and start a discussion with parents. HW: If you want to meet to see Disney’s Earth movie – we are going Friday at 4:40.
Reminder: Our field trip is next Tuesday. IF you have not returned your $8 & permission slip, you need to do so immediately. We’re very excited about our day at Pink Palace to see the Scoop on Poop exhibit and the IMAX on Egyptian tombs.

This week is TCAP testing week. Students need two wooden #2 pencils (NO mechanical pencils – they damage the answer sheet) AND they need a good night’s rest, and a protein filled breakfast (meats, cheeses, eggs, and/or nuts). This is their homework every night!

Your student’s scores are vital for the exciting programs offered at middle school: enriched Language Arts, enriched math, & in 8th grade Physical Science for high school credit. I’ve told all of the kids that I want them to do as well as possible so that that they have the option of ALL the classes (enriched or regular). Students must score at high percentages to qualify for enriched classes.
