This is the last week of the nine weeks. If you have been recently absent, be sure you have turned in your work from when you were out. Spring Break is next week!

I know this is last minute, but CMS is offering an Earth Day t-shirt for $12.  It’s a CUTE green shirt with a rainforest frog.  ALL of the profits will be used to beautify campus with trees, bushes, flowers, etc.  Have money (if check payable to CMS) & shirt size – only adult sizes available in by FRIDAY!!!

Science 3/9-3/13

Mon. 3/9 CW: (1) Write up as a lab group Save the Cube p. 566. Decide what materials you will bring to use to fight conduction, convection, & radiation. (2) Begin on definitions with colored pictures for chp. 15 HW: bring materials for tomorrow’s lab & dress for it.

Tues. 3/10 CW: (1) Go over test for last chp. Test papers returned today. (2) Lab – conduct experiment & collect results HW: definitions with colored pictures for chp. 15 are due Friday

Wed. 3/11 CW: (1)  Calculate % of ice melted & write conclusion for lab.  Discuss reasons for unusual answers – mostly due to inaccurate measurements on triple beam balance.  (2) Begin Waves chp. 15 lessons 1 & 2.  We went through 1 together.  Students already know lesson 2 – parts of wave.  (3) Do wkbk.  pp. 122-124   HW (1) finish wb pp. 122-124 if you didn’t in class  (2) definitions chp. 15 with colored pictures due Friday

Thurs. 3/12  CW:  We got to see the CMS production of GREASE today.  Congratulations, Ellie, you stole the show!!!!!!   classes were allowed to work on workbook pages for lesson 2 & their definitions due tomorrow.  HW:  definitions chp. 15 with colored pictures due tomorrow  Don’t forget CMS Earth Day t-shirt order if you want one – $12 due tomorrow

Don’t forget the Health Fair Tuesday, March 3rd in the gym from 6-8 pm. All activities are FREE. Health professionals will be here for health screenings. There is fun for the whole family with games & activities for the kids! All CMS students attending earn a ticket to go to the student-staff volleyball game, Friday 3/13 & miss last period of the day! The class with the highest percentage of participants gets to PLAY in that volleyball game.

Dad’s Day is this Wednesday. Remind dad’s they may NOT park on the bus lot. They need to park on the most western side of school in the teacher’s parking lot.

Also, those who volunteered to bring the cookies for our lab, we need the cookies by Tuesday. Each class needs 2 boxes of Keebler’s Deluxe Chocolate chip hard cookies, 2 boxes of Chips A Hoy hard cookies, and 2 boxes of generic (Kroger only place that has them now) chocolate chip hard cookies

Science 2/23 – 2/27

Mon. 2/23 CW: (1) Review lesson 2 – take notes. (2) Demonstration of bimetallic strip curling when heated & conduction ball & ring – the ball expanded & would not go through the ring after the ball was heated. (3) check wb. pp. 106-109 from Friday (4) For a grade – completed questions about section 2 using your notes, checked workbook pages, & book. HW: PLEASE BRING THE COOKIES TOMORROW IF YOU PROMISED TO BRING THEM!!!!!

Wed. 2/18 CW: (1) TCAP review. Students worked in lab groups reviewing concepts covered so far. If a lab group scores a 90% or better, each member will receive a treat and 3 tickets. For every lab group that works well together – debating answers politely, working on science, etc. each member will have the opportunity to replace a “0″ already received with a “100.” HW definitions for chp 13 with colored pictures are due tomorrow.

Thurs. 2/19 CW: (1) Finish TCAP review (2) Heat & Heat Technology chp. 13 – lessons 1 & 2 up through conduction, convection, & radiation pp. 362-371. (3) Brainpop on (1) Heat & (2) Temperature. Interims come home this week. Students who have been absent due to illness have 1 day for each excused day of absence to make up work. Long term projects that have been assigned such as Science Fair Projects are still due on the original assigned due date.

General News…Permission slips for Dance this Friday Night sponsored by the CMS Lady Dragons came home Monday. Dance is $7 on Friday from 6-9 PM. Tickets will be sold during lunch this week. No tickets will be sold at the door. SCS dress code applies.

Science – We are dropping eggs to see if we can transfer energy of the falling egg to prevent it from breaking. If you haven’t been able to donate 50 cents to a $1, please consider helping to defray Ms. McLemore’s out of pocket expenses to provide this opportunity. Thank you!

Mon. 1/26 CW: Review forms of energy & write up lab p. 565 Eggstremely Fragile. Each student’s lab will be different based upon the materials that he/she brings for the lab. HW: (1) Dress for lab tomorrow – closed toe shoes, older clothes, & long hair pulled back. Bring materials you want to protect your egg with tomorrow. Do NOT bring an egg. I have them. (2) Your data charts and conclusion are due Friday for your science fair experiment.

SCIENCE FAIR INFORMATION WENT HOME MONDAY 1/12/09 FOR ALL 6TH GRADE STUDENTS AT CMS. (1) ALL students must complete an individual science experiment and write it up as a lab just like in our lab composition books. (2) APEX students must also make a copy of the information to put on a self standing tri-fold board (see board handout). APEX students may earn extra credit by doing a 1 1/2 page reserach paper using at least 2 sources that you put in a bibliography (3) Non APEX students may make a copy of the information & put it on a self standing tri-fold board (see hand out about how the board is to look) for extra credit. See handout for what is due on 1/16 1/23 and 1/30 – if you have a parent signature on the sheet in additions to the part of the lab due, you may earn extra credit. Each due date is a quiz grade. The due date for the final project is 2/5/09. It is due during homeroom. It is 10 points off for each day it is late. If it’s not here during homeroom, that’s late.

Mon. 1/12 CW: (1) Go over the 3 science fair handouts. These are the only copies you will get. DON’T LOSE THEM. If you were absent today, see me for these. (2) check wb. pp. 83-84 (3) complete puzzle from Friday if you didn’t (4) Test for chp. 10 is using your checked workbook pages & your book – you may finish tomorrow. HW: Decide what kind of experiment you want to do. On FRIDAY you must turn in your purpose, research, & hypothesis. For example, if my project was about what paws dogs & cats use, I would turn in Problem: Are cats and dogs more likely to be left pawed? Hypothesis: The majority of people are right handed. My cat and dog are both left pawed. IF cats and dogs are different than humans, then they are more likely to be left pawed.

Tues. 1/13 CW: (1) Complete open book & open workbook chp. 10 test. (2) Share constellation stories if you want (3) begin on definitions for chp. 8. Write each word in purple, its definition, and draw a colored picture beside the word. HW: Remember 1st deadline for science experiment is due Friday. See Monday night’s homework for example.

Wed. 1/14 CW: (1) Read & discuss about Earth’s sun – pp. 211 -215. (2) Do worksheet about the sun’s layers and what each one does. (3) wkbk. pp. 64-66 # 1-22 all. Finish this for homework if you didn’t finish in class. (4) work on chp. 8 defintions & colored pictures. HW: (1) finish wb. pp. 64-66 # 1-22 if you didnt’ in class. (2) Purpose, research (2 sentences of background information) and your hypothesis is due Friday.

Thurs. 1/15 CW: (1) Answer questions about what’s due tomorrow for science fair.  (2) Bill Nye – 13 greatest astrological discoveries  HW: Purpose, research 2 sentences of background information) and your hypothesis is due Friday.

Happy New Year! I hope everyone has had a restful two weeks and is excited to get back to learning new and exciting science concepts! If you didn’t check your school supplies over the break, please check to be sure you have plenty of paper, pencils, red pens, colored pencils, etc.

Mon. 1/5 CW: Following written directions. Remember to read ALL directions before beginning, & begin stars – chp. 10. Watch Magic School Bus on stars – you should know what a star is made of, how long stars take to form, how old a yellow star like our sun is, & what a red supergiant star is. HW: check to be sure you have needed school supplies. GO GET THEM if you don’t. (2) workbook pp. 78-81 chp. 10 section 1 due Wednesday.
